PSP Launch: Hot or Not? (IGN)

Personally, I like that Nintendo does interesting new things with their systems over companies like SONY, who just made a portable gaming machine. However, after having seen a lot of info on the PSP, I was more excited about it. Especially with the motion sensing mercury game they have at launch. I was surprised the portable machine didn’t sell out more or hit harder with all the hype though…however, it is pricey and people don’t have the advantage of the backward compatibility with older PS2 or PS1 games like the DS has with gameboy. I also don’t think the little movie releases they have for PSP will do well and I have been saying that for some time. I just think that people don’t want a video format that they can only really play in one place - on the PSP itself.

I have also read that they have been plagued with display issues.

Display issues in terms of dead pixels I have heard of but SONY will apparently replace any unit with dead pixels.

those that I’ve talked with that bought them are loving them, of course it is still the first week… the movies look good on the screen, the launch games are generally ones that already sold well on the PS2 (or based on good selling games) and seem to be fun good gameplay games.

    the problems I’ve heard are

“slow load times” on the games (I don’t find this surprising for an optical media in a portable player).

Dead Pixels (all the places here in winnipeg are doing exchanges as far as I’ve heard)

Sticky/Stuck buttons (a very small percentage of units, but appears to be some kind of manufacturing defect)

This is not about the subject wirtten but I hope you guys have a safe trip to toronto I and will miss you guys so so much!

Yeah all those problems are a small percentage of the Japan released units and maybe some US units as well.
I have a bought a PSP unit and nothing is wrong with it.
This machine is soooo nice and powerful compared to nintendo DS
Im waiting for emulation, fireware hacking and a 1 gig Memory stick :-)
Oh and Gran Turismo PSP and gran theft auto PSP also.
The only thing is the damn loading.
But they will find a way to optimize the laoding like they did with the ps2 and xbox.

I think the statement in your post, “like SONY, who just made a portable gaming machine” is totally unfair. Sony’s PSP plays games, plays movies and acts as a portable digital music player. :loud: It’s Nintendo’s DS that is ONLY a portable gaming machine. Personally, I think the PSP is WAY cooler, but the big problem is price. Not just the unit itself, but the games, which are selling in retail stores as high as games for a Playstation 2. Traditionally, portable unit games are $30 cheaper or more. Still, if I were swimming in cash, I’d drop some on the PSP.

The DS though has sold a very respecable 3 million units since launch. The public is eating them up. Very good price point on them though, from a name that everybody knows in portable gaming.

Wow the PSP sold more than people expected: 500,000 units in 2 days.

i must respons that the PSP is da shiat !
ive been playing with mine for 2 weeks now and I can’t let is go.
the Wirless is such a nice feature and the games are fun.
I have twisted metal, wipeout pure and gretsky hockey.
The video and mp3 playing option is even nicer, you can go everywhere and plug my psp into any1 pc speakers. w00t !
I even played wipeout pure on my car stereo system wich has a nice thumping subwoofer in it. You can’t get more immersive than that, I tell ya !

Cool! I wish that EB Games and stores like it had a working demo machine because I would like to try it out. So far all I have seen for demos in stores are Nintendo DS’s.

I’m trying to win one of those things this month!!
